Eggs are a vital ingredient in dozens of Unilever products, ranging from mayonnaises to mustards, dressings and sauces. “Our mission to use 100% cage-free eggs by 2020 is in full swing,” says Deenya Rabius, Category Mix Marketing Director at Unilever Food Solutions. “We already source cage-free eggs for many of our products, and are continuing to expand use as supply grows.”
The numbers involved are significant. In North America, for Hellmann®’s Light Mayonnaise alone, producing the cage-free formula involves sourcing approximately 3.5 million pounds (1.6 million kilos) of eggs from an estimated 125,000 hens. That’s enough to produce 30 million jars of mayonnaise! Hellmann®’s cage-free egg products are American Humane Certified by the American Humane Association (AHA), the leading certifier of cage-free eggs in the U.S.
Cage-Free eggs come from hens with sufficient space to move or engage in normal behavior, unlike battery cages, which are cramped and uncomfortable for the animals. The conditions in which eggs are produced vary widely across the world and within markets.
