“We are delighted to have been ranked the number one food company by the Dow Jones Sustainability Index for the 11th year in a row,” said CEO Paul Polman. “Increasingly, successful organizations need to operate under long-term sustainable business models and reflect this in all their activities. I am proud of all the Unilever employees who have worked hard to put sustainability at the heart of what we do.”
Unilever’s commitment to sustainable practices and helping to protect the environment is global in scope and has already had significant impact on every continent. Efforts include sustainable agriculture, more responsible sourcing, improving world nutrition, stricter manufacturing standards, minimizing global warming and ensuring fair working conditions for all. The Dow Jones Sustainability Index is the first global index tracking the financial performance of the leading sustainability-driven companies worldwide. The annual review of the DJSI is based on a thorough analysis of corporate economic, environmental and social performance, assessing issues such as corporate governance, risk management, branding, climate change mitigation, supply chain standards and labor practices. Swiss investment group, SAM, together with Dow Jones Indexes and STOXX LTD, conducted the 2009 assessment. |
